26 countries · 2025 household estimates · pet-count years unspecified

More catsMore dogs

How to read: Animal counts per 100 households, not the percentage of households that own a pet. Each dot is a country. Above the diagonal, cats outnumber dogs; below it, dogs outnumber cats. Both axes use the same scale. Hover or tap for country details.

Scope: The 26 countries with both pet counts and harmonized Eurostat household estimates in the supplied dataset. Pet-count years are unknown; this is an indicative mixed-year comparison, not a synchronized 2025 snapshot.

Household calculation methodology

Households use the 2025 Eurostat EU Labour Force Survey series lfst_hhnhtych, with frequency A; agechild, n_child, and phhcomp set to TOTAL; and unit THS_HH. Published household estimates are multiplied by 1,000. Each animal count is divided by the household estimate and multiplied by 100. Survey estimates may differ from census or register counts. Ratios average across all households, including those without pets.
