The Urban Order Is Tilting Toward Asia and Africa

Within the 20 cities projected to be largest in 2050, Dhaka and Jakarta rise to the top while older giants such as Tokyo, Mexico City, and São Paulo drift down the order. Several of the sharpest climbs come from South and Southeast Asia plus Africa.

The Voronoi table is keyed to 2050 population rank, so this chart takes the 20 cities projected to lead in 2050 and then re-ranks that same cohort at each year using the population values listed on the page. That keeps the bump chart readable while preserving the direction of change. On narrow screens, only the priority lines keep direct endpoint labels.
