Premier League Rank Prediction Vesus Reality
About Makeover Monday
MakeoverMonday is a social data project: “Each week we post a link to a chart, and its data, and then you rework the chart. Maybe you retell the story more effectively, or find a new story in the data. We’re curious to see the different approaches you all take. Whether it’s a simple bar chart or an elaborate infographic, we encourage everyone of all skills to partake. Together we can have broader conversations about and with data.”
Starting from Jan 08, 2018, I decided to put aside one hour on Monday weekly to create some visualization and find some insights from the data.
The datasets are published each week at: MakeoverMonday Datasets.
Makeover Monday 0521
This week’s topic is the comparison between the prediction and actual rank of the Premier League 2017-18 by The Guardian. It’s interesting to see how far the prediction is from the reality. Ohhh cold, hard reality :)
You can find the original report here.
My Visualization
At first, I was thinking about making some bump chart to visualize the difference between prediction and reality. However, considering we have 20 teams to visualize, which will make the bump chart kind of messy, I ended up with the below viz. (Not sure how to call this kind of chart…)

Insights
- It seems like predicting top players is much easier than predicting lower-rank teams - the deviation between prediction and reality is lower for top teams.
