ACLED: Visualizing Conflict

About Makeover Monday

MakeoverMonday is a social data project: “Each week we post a link to a chart, and its data, and then you rework the chart. Maybe you retell the story more effectively, or find a new story in the data. We’re curious to see the different approaches you all take. Whether it’s a simple bar chart or an elaborate infographic, we encourage everyone of all skills to partake. Together we can have broader conversations about and with data.”

Starting from Jan 08, 2018, I decided to put aside one hour on Monday weekly to create some visualization and find some insights from the data.

The datasets are published each week at: MakeoverMonday Datasets.

Makeover Monday 0820

This week has a heavy topic – conflicts around the world since 2017. The original dashboard could be found here. From it, you can see that in some part of the world, life is still very hard – a lot of protest and violence :(. The dataset consists of the event location, date, fatalities, description, etc.

My Visualization

I spent around one hour to create a dashboard including - a map of all the conflicts happened in 2017, a country-level conflicts and fatalities matrix, and a event type level summary. Also, you can change the threshold of fatalities on the top to show only the most violent conflicts, and you can select on countries on the scatter plot to filter on country.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • Most of the conflicts locate in Africa, Middle East, South Asia;
  • Syria, Afghanistan, Yemen, and Irap are the four countries with most fatalities due to conflicts in 2017. India also has high amuont of conflicts happened in 2017, but the fatalities are much lower compared to these four countires;
  • The conflict with highest fatality happened in Somalia on 10/14/2017 because of two car bomb explosion, with 587 people dead;
  • Those battle with no territory changed caused most fatalities :(
