5-Year Cancer Survival Rates in US

About Makeover Monday

MakeoverMonday is a social data project: “Each week we post a link to a chart, and its data, and then you rework the chart. Maybe you retell the story more effectively, or find a new story in the data. We’re curious to see the different approaches you all take. Whether it’s a simple bar chart or an elaborate infographic, we encourage everyone of all skills to partake. Together we can have broader conversations about and with data.”

Starting from Jan 08, 2018, I decided to put aside one hour on Monday weekly to create some visualization and find some insights from the data.

The datasets are published each week at: MakeoverMonday Datasets.

Makeover Monday 1008

This week’s data is about 5-year cancer survival rate, a very serious topic. I will definitely recommend everyone to read the original report, as it is very content-rich with lots of great insights and also bunches of dashboards.
The data has the dimension of cancer type, gender, rate, and year. Basically, it tells how the 5-year cancer survival rate changes over time.

My Visualization

This week, I again tried to replicate the original viz in Tableau. I like the way of using the length of the line to show how much the survival rate changed in what direction, with the ease to compare both survival rate and survival rate change across different cancer categories.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • Prostate Cancer and Thyroid Cancer are the two type of cancers that has highest survival rate as of the cancer cases diagnosed in 2013 (>95%);
  • We are seeing greatest improvement of survival rate of Leukemia Cancer and Prostate Cancer from 1980 to 2013;
  • The cancer with lowest survival rate so far is the Pancreas Cancer, and the survival rate improvement is also relatively small since 1980;
  • From the data, we are seeing Female has higher survival rate compared to Male.
