Total Number of Women the House of Representatives: 1917-2018

About Makeover Monday

MakeoverMonday is a social data project: “Each week we post a link to a chart, and its data, and then you rework the chart. Maybe you retell the story more effectively, or find a new story in the data. We’re curious to see the different approaches you all take. Whether it’s a simple bar chart or an elaborate infographic, we encourage everyone of all skills to partake. Together we can have broader conversations about and with data.”

Starting from Jan 08, 2018, I decided to put aside one hour on Monday weekly to create some visualization and find some insights from the data.

The datasets are published each week at: MakeoverMonday Datasets.

Makeover Monday 1015

This week’s data is about the number of female representatives in the US House of Representatives. The orginal viz shows clearly that women representatives in the Democratic Party has increased a lot to 32% over time (still much less than half), however, in the Republican Party, only 9% house representatives are women. This seems quite shocking to me.

My Visualization

Except from comparing the women representative percentage between the Republican and Domocratic, I think it’s also valuable to visualize the total number of women representatives in the House of Representatives.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • Althrough we are seeing more and more female in the House of Representatives, they still only count for less than 20% of the total representatives;
  • Especially in the Republican Party, they only have less than 10% female representatives in the House.
