MakeoverMonday is a social data project: “Each week we post a link to a chart, and its data, and then you rework the chart. Maybe you retell the story more effectively, or find a new story in the data. We’re curious to see the different approaches you all take. Starting from Jan 08, 2018, I decided to put aside one hour on Monday weekly to create some visualization and find some insights from the data.

Makeover Monday 1126

This week’s data is around the cost of night out in some of the large cities around the world. There are two categories of nights – Date Night (costs include Dinner, Drinks at dinner, and Cinema entry for two people), and Party Night (costs include Club entry, Taxi, 2 Longdrinks, and Big Mac for one person). You can find the original viz here. It’s a straightforward stacked bar chart – easy to understand and compare across cities.

My Visualization

This time I tried a brand new type of chart – Radial Stacked Bar Chart. Luckily, I found this very detailed turtorial online. It uses some ‘magic’ to plot the bar chart with polygon and calculate the x,y coordinates in Tableau. I simply followed the turtorial, and spent around one hour and a half to make the below dashboard.

Insights

• The dinner cost at New York is the highest around the world, but for the other type of costs, actually it’s not that high… Instead, Tokyo is the city with highest average cost for a Date Night;
• Surprisingly, Zurich is the most expensive city regarding the cost on the Party Night, largely due to its high price of longdrinks and Taxi;
• The cost of both Date Night and Party Night are cheapeast at Mexico City in our dataset.
