Press Freedom’s Dark Horizon

About Makeover Monday

MakeoverMonday is a social data project: “Each week we post a link to a chart, and its data, and then you rework the chart. Maybe you retell the story more effectively, or find a new story in the data. We’re curious to see the different approaches you all take. Whether it’s a simple bar chart or an elaborate infographic, we encourage everyone of all skills to partake. Together we can have broader conversations about and with data.”

Starting from Jan 08, 2018, I decided to put aside one hour on Monday weekly to create some visualization and find some insights from the data.

The datasets are published each week at: MakeoverMonday Datasets.

Makeover Monday 20190107

This is the first MakeoverMonday of 2019. Happy New Year!!!
This week, the data is around the press freedom all over the world from 1993 to 2016. You can find the original viz here. You can even click into each country to get a detailed view and report, so I do like this viz (and this site design) a lot.
The data matches with what we knew and expected, but I will not comment too much (of course there are many political factors involved).

My Visualization

Trying to expand what the original viz tells, I added a year filter, a top 10 and buttom 10 countries list, and a score trend when users select any of the countries on the map or from the list.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • Overall, the world press freedom got worse comparing 2016 to 1993, as we saw obviously more ‘red’ in Soutch America and Africa;
  • European countries are always considered to have more press freedom than most of the other parts in the world.
