North American Bear Attacks

About Makeover Monday

MakeoverMonday is a social data project: “Each week we post a link to a chart, and its data, and then you rework the chart. Maybe you retell the story more effectively, or find a new story in the data. We’re curious to see the different approaches you all take. Whether it’s a simple bar chart or an elaborate infographic, we encourage everyone of all skills to partake. Together we can have broader conversations about and with data.”

Starting from Jan 08, 2018, I decided to put aside one hour on Monday weekly to create some visualization and find some insights from the data.

The datasets are published each week at: MakeoverMonday Datasets.

Makeover Monday 20190520

Last week the data is about people killing Rhino illegally, and this week, it’s about bears killing people… You can find the original viz and article here. The original dataset is on the people level… Reading the detailed description of how people died from bear attacks makes me really sad :( .

My Visualization

Nothing special… Made a dashboard with montly fatality count and a map of fatality incidents, and you can filter on the bear type on the upper right.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • We see much more fatal bear attacks in summer (June to Oct) than the other seasons. This is both because bears are more active in these seasons, and because people are more active (more hiking, trialing, …);
  • Alaska has most fatal bear attacks since 1990 (but sure, Alaska is much larger than many of other states);
  • Black bear attacks are more widely happened across North America than other two bear types – this is definitely related to where the bear inhabits.
