Fall is favorite season for most Americans

About Makeover Monday

MakeoverMonday is a social data project: “Each week we post a link to a chart, and its data, and then you rework the chart. Maybe you retell the story more effectively, or find a new story in the data. We’re curious to see the different approaches you all take. Whether it’s a simple bar chart or an elaborate infographic, we encourage everyone of all skills to partake. Together we can have broader conversations about and with data.”

Starting from Jan 08, 2018, I decided to put aside one hour on Monday weekly to create some visualization and find some insights from the data.

The datasets are published each week at: MakeoverMonday Datasets.

Makeover Monday 20190902

This week’s data is about a survey of favorite season of Americans. The original article and vizzes can be found here. And I am not surprised that Fall is the most chosen one, as it means harvest and the weather is relatively better (not too hot/cold). It’s also interesting to read the rest part of the article: people in the west show higher satisfaction with the weather – weather is truly my favorite part of California!

My Visualization

Inspired by a viz by Amar that I saw on data.world discussion board, I also made something similar to a radial chart.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • Though all the age groups show higher preferences towards Fall, younger group (18-34) show relatively weaker preference, while people over 55 extremely dislike Winter and Summer – this is understandable as extreme whether is always a challenge to older people.
