Evictions in San Francisco

About Makeover Monday

MakeoverMonday is a social data project: “Each week we post a link to a chart, and its data, and then you rework the chart. Maybe you retell the story more effectively, or find a new story in the data. We’re curious to see the different approaches you all take. Whether it’s a simple bar chart or an elaborate infographic, we encourage everyone of all skills to partake. Together we can have broader conversations about and with data.”

Starting from Jan 08, 2018, I decided to put aside one hour on Monday weekly to create some visualization and find some insights from the data.

The datasets are published each week at: MakeoverMonday Datasets.

Makeover Monday 20190923

This week’s data is very close to my life – Evictions in San Francisco. Before reading the report, I never realize there is such thing called Eviction and I have no idea of The Ellis Act. This dataset has all the eviction notices at SF since1997. Also, living at SF with such a high rental has always been a pain to me.

My Visualization

This week’s viz is very simple and classic – a dashboard with trendline on top and map viz on bottom, and time and notice causes filter on the header.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • There are two spikes of the eviction notices happening – one around 1998 and another around 2016;
  • But the two spikes were caused by differen reasons – the 1998 one mainly caused by high volumn of ‘owner moved in’, while the 2016 one has more diversed causes;
  • Also, overall we see most evictions happening in zipcode 94110 (around Misson), but this is not always the most frequent zipcode for all the causes.
