London Population Predictions

About Makeover Monday

MakeoverMonday is a social data project: “Each week we post a link to a chart, and its data, and then you rework the chart. Maybe you retell the story more effectively, or find a new story in the data. We’re curious to see the different approaches you all take. Whether it’s a simple bar chart or an elaborate infographic, we encourage everyone of all skills to partake. Together we can have broader conversations about and with data.”

Starting from Jan 08, 2018, I decided to put aside one hour on Monday weekly to create some visualization and find some insights from the data.

The datasets are published each week at: MakeoverMonday Datasets.

Makeover Monday 20190930

This week, we are looking at the London Population Projection. The projection shows a very steady growing trend. However, it also provides breadown of gender, age, and different population growth type – births and deaths, domestic migrations, and international migrations. All the data are publicly avaiable on London Datastore.

My Visualization

To provide one level down info of the population projection, I put the three main population increase type trend aside the overall projection trend.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • Something I found interesting about the data is that – though from 2011 to 2017, London has experienced some severe domestic population loss (I lot of London people migrated out of London to other part of the UK), however, it still predicts the domestic population became a net gain since 2018 (I believe since 2018 the dataset is a projection…)…
  • If we assume the projection is actually reliable (regardless of the above issue), then natural poplation growth (birth - death), domestic migration, and international migration contribute similarly to the overall population growth.
