Weekly Viz 2019-10-28
World Cities Ranked by Average Annual Sunshine Hours
About Makeover Monday
MakeoverMonday is a social data project: “Each week we post a link to a chart, and its data, and then you rework the chart. Maybe you retell the story more effectively, or find a new story in the data. We’re curious to see the different approaches you all take. Whether it’s a simple bar chart or an elaborate infographic, we encourage everyone of all skills to partake. Together we can have broader conversations about and with data.”
Starting from Jan 08, 2018, I decided to put aside one hour on Monday weekly to create some visualization and find some insights from the data.
The datasets are published each week at: MakeoverMonday Datasets.
Makeover Monday 20191028
This week’s dataset is about the cities with most and least sunshine hours around the world. You can find the original viz here. The viz is pretty cool – easy to understand radial charts with clear legends. Honest, I am surpirsed that Taipei is the country with 3rd least sunshine hour in Aisa…
My Visualization
I also made some radial charts with a shape similar to the sun to compare the sunshine hours of the US cities :)

Insights
- It’s not surpising that cities with longest sunshine hours are in Arizona, and those with shortest hours are in Alaska and other northern states.
- But I am surprised that San Francisco actually has longer sunshine hours than Honolulu…
