Las Vegas Convention Attendance & Visitor Traffic: Jan 1970-Oct 2019

About Makeover Monday

MakeoverMonday is a social data project: “Each week we post a link to a chart, and its data, and then you rework the chart. Maybe you retell the story more effectively, or find a new story in the data. We’re curious to see the different approaches you all take. Whether it’s a simple bar chart or an elaborate infographic, we encourage everyone of all skills to partake. Together we can have broader conversations about and with data.”

Starting from Jan 08, 2018, I decided to put aside one hour on Monday weekly to create some visualization and find some insights from the data.

The datasets are published each week at: MakeoverMonday Datasets.

This week’s dataset is about Las Vegas Convention Attendance & Visitor Traffic. Althrough not too many rows, it’s actually info rich with visitor volume, room occupancy, convention attendance, tax, air passenger, and gaming revenue.

My Visualization

With so much info at hand, I chose one small angle to tell one story – a trend comparing room occupancy during weekend and midweeks. It’s very clear to see that weekend always has a much higher room occupancy (as high as 95% these recent years). People are definitly traveling around the world to Las Vegas just for enjoying weekends.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • Room occupancy rate is typically ~10% higher during the weekends than during the weekdays;
  • Though we did see a slight drop in the weekend room occupancy trend around the recession near 2008 (and also the sharp room inventory increase in 2008-2009 contributed to that), recent years it has been as high as 95%.
