Weekly Viz 2019-12-23
Estimated Christmas spending by concept
About Makeover Monday
MakeoverMonday is a social data project: “Each week we post a link to a chart, and its data, and then you rework the chart. Maybe you retell the story more effectively, or find a new story in the data. We’re curious to see the different approaches you all take. Whether it’s a simple bar chart or an elaborate infographic, we encourage everyone of all skills to partake. Together we can have broader conversations about and with data.”
Starting from Jan 08, 2018, I decided to put aside one hour on Monday weekly to create some visualization and find some insights from the data.
The datasets are published each week at: MakeoverMonday Datasets.
Makeover Monday 20191223
This week’s data is about the estimated Christmas spending in 2018 and 2019 for UK and Europe consumers. It breaks down the spending by different categories including food, gifts, socialise, and traveling. The original article and viz (actually a table) can be found here.
My Visualization
Sometimes I feel that visualzing fewer data points is harder as there is fewer story to tell and more limited ways to visualize…

Insights
- UK consumer’s Chirstmas spending on traveling has significantly increased by 22%, though it’s still lower than Europe consumers’ average traveling spending (though it might not be a fair comparison due to currency exchange, typical traveling expense, etc.);
- Spending on gifts is always the highest spending category for both UK and Europe consumers.
