Weekly Viz 2020-01-06
What is America’s most popular sport?
About Makeover Monday
MakeoverMonday is a social data project: “Each week we post a link to a chart, and its data, and then you rework the chart. Maybe you retell the story more effectively, or find a new story in the data. We’re curious to see the different approaches you all take. Whether it’s a simple bar chart or an elaborate infographic, we encourage everyone of all skills to partake. Together we can have broader conversations about and with data.”
Starting from Jan 08, 2018, I decided to put aside one hour on Monday weekly to create some visualization and find some insights from the data.
The datasets are published each week at: MakeoverMonday Datasets.
Makeover Monday 20200106
This is the first MoM in 2020 (in this decade!). The dataset is about America’s favorite sport to watch. The orignal report is very content-rich – highly recommend reading through it if you are a sports fan.
My Visualization
The dataset is kind of weird that it skipped several years between 2004 and 2017. Therefore, I only picked four years – 2004, 2008, 2013 and 2017 to show the trend.

Insights
- Football is no doubt the most popular sport in the US with over 1/3 of the respondants saying it’s their favorite;
- However, the competition of the second popular sport is very fierce – Basketball, Baseball, and None (no favorite sports) have got very close support of 10-15% respondants.
