Violence Against Women & Girls – perceptions in African, Asian and South American countries

About Makeover Monday

MakeoverMonday is a social data project: “Each week we post a link to a chart, and its data, and then you rework the chart. Maybe you retell the story more effectively, or find a new story in the data. We’re curious to see the different approaches you all take. Whether it’s a simple bar chart or an elaborate infographic, we encourage everyone of all skills to partake. Together we can have broader conversations about and with data.”

Starting from Jan 08, 2018, I decided to put aside one hour on Monday weekly to create some visualization and find some insights from the data.

The datasets are published each week at: MakeoverMonday Datasets.

Makeover Monday 20200309

Yesterday was International Women’s Day, and this year’s theme is #EachforEqual. This week’s MoM dataset is also related to that – it’s about the perception of violence against women and girls in some African, Asian and South American countries. It is astonishing to me that there are more women than men in those countires thinking these kind of voilence can be justified…

My Visualization

I am using simple bar charts to show the differences between men and women’s perception and across different type of violence.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • Across all violence types and all sub demographics segments, there are more women than men in those countires thinking the voilence against women and girls can be justified… This is a super sad fact and makes realize that the world we are living in are not always a good place…
  • Comparing the % agreed that the voilence can be justified across segments within the category, the two demographics category that show up to have effects on changing people’s perceptions are education and residence. But residence (rural/urban) can actually be confounded by education;
  • It worth to notice that the survey is conducted through 2005 to 2018 in different countries, so simply comparing the countries may not be fair…
