Courses in Berkeley 1900-2011

About Makeover Monday

MakeoverMonday is a social data project: “Each week we post a link to a chart, and its data, and then you rework the chart. Maybe you retell the story more effectively, or find a new story in the data. We’re curious to see the different approaches you all take. Whether it’s a simple bar chart or an elaborate infographic, we encourage everyone of all skills to partake. Together we can have broader conversations about and with data.”

Starting from Jan 08, 2018, I decided to put aside one hour on Monday weekly to create some visualization and find some insights from the data.

The datasets are published each week at: MakeoverMonday Datasets.

Makeover Monday 20200323

This week we looked at the courses that has ever opened at UC Berkeley from 1900 to 2011. The original viz is a simple pie chart compared the course counts by fields at four universities in California by year. But you know, pie chart in most cases is not a good choice :)

My Visualization

To compare the number of courses by area over time, I created a bump chart. But as it only carries the rank info, I also created a line chart below breakdown by sub-areas and with the selected area in the bump chart highlighted.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • “Humanities” has been the area with most courses open since 1970, until a recent decline in 2009; And this is mained caused by the boom of “Ethnic Studies” courses in 70s;
  • The recent increase of courses in “Professional” area is led by the increase in “Business”, “Health Service” and “Architecture”;
  • Meanwhile, “Education” has almost always been at the bottom.
