Pump prices over time

About Makeover Monday

MakeoverMonday is a social data project: “Each week we post a link to a chart, and its data, and then you rework the chart. Maybe you retell the story more effectively, or find a new story in the data. We’re curious to see the different approaches you all take. Whether it’s a simple bar chart or an elaborate infographic, we encourage everyone of all skills to partake. Together we can have broader conversations about and with data.”

Starting from Jan 08, 2018, I decided to put aside one hour on Monday weekly to create some visualization and find some insights from the data.

The datasets are published each week at: MakeoverMonday Datasets.

Makeover Monday 20200427

This week’s data is the weekly petrol and diesel prices since 2003. This is a hot topic given the recent drop of oil price. The original article and viz can be found here, seems like another downward cycle is coming.

My Visualization

I plot a line trend of the petrol / diesel price, with black line capped at the historical max at each time point. And the bottom chart shows at at a given time point, how the price has been changing since then (cumulative % of differences). You can hover on the top chart to change the anchorred starting time of the bottom chart.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • There have been two obvious drops of oil price in the past – one in 2008 due to the global recession, which takes about three years to climb back to the price before the recession; Another between 2013 and 2016 due to the world oil supply glut, and since then the petrol price has not gone back to the previous peak yet.
