The Global Divide on Homosexuality Persists

About Makeover Monday

MakeoverMonday is a social data project: “Each week we post a link to a chart, and its data, and then you rework the chart. Maybe you retell the story more effectively, or find a new story in the data. We’re curious to see the different approaches you all take. Whether it’s a simple bar chart or an elaborate infographic, we encourage everyone of all skills to partake. Together we can have broader conversations about and with data.”

Starting from Jan 08, 2018, I decided to put aside one hour on Monday weekly to create some visualization and find some insights from the data.

The datasets are published each week at: MakeoverMonday Datasets.

This week, the article is about the global perception of homosexuality. It talks about how each country thinks about homosexuality, and how it changes over time. The dataset that is picked for this week’s MoM is from a very interesting perspective – the correlation between religion affliation and the acceptance of homosexuality.

My Visualization

I am using the line charts to show the difference between those who see religion as an important part of their daily life vs. not, and across different countries.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • In all the countries, people who think ‘Religion is not very important’ show higher percentage believing ‘homosexuality should be accepted by the society’, vice versa – But this is a correlation, not neccessarily a causation. Many other confounded factors like age, education, etc. could play a role here;
  • Comparing across countires, West European countries and North American countries show higher acceptance to homosexuality, while Middle East and East Eruopean countries show the lowest.
