About Makeover Monday

MakeoverMonday is a social data project: “Each week we post a link to a chart, and its data, and then you rework the chart. Maybe you retell the story more effectively, or find a new story in the data. We’re curious to see the different approaches you all take. Whether it’s a simple bar chart or an elaborate infographic, we encourage everyone of all skills to partake. Together we can have broader conversations about and with data.”

Starting from Jan 08, 2018, I decided to put aside one hour on Monday weekly to create some visualization and find some insights from the data.

The datasets are published each week at: MakeoverMonday Datasets.

Makeover Monday 20200921

This week the dataset is around price developement in EU and all European countries – it has the data points for all-item HICP (Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices) and books category specifically. The original viz looked at the two price comparison over time for EU, and clearly books used to be more expensive comparing to general all item level, but over time, its price growth is much slower and now became cheaper than all-item HICP.

My Visualization

The original chart plotted the two price trend, but they have different starting point. So I made a chart of % price diff since 2019 to show the growth rate difference better.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • Over the past 10 years, all-item HICP has been up for 17%, while for books category, it’s much slower at 10%;
  • As a result, since 2017, book price has been lower than the all-item HICP.
