Child Marriage
About Makeover Monday
MakeoverMonday is a social data project: “Each week we post a link to a chart, and its data, and then you rework the chart. Maybe you retell the story more effectively, or find a new story in the data. We’re curious to see the different approaches you all take. Whether it’s a simple bar chart or an elaborate infographic, we encourage everyone of all skills to partake. Together we can have broader conversations about and with data.”
Starting from Jan 08, 2018, I decided to put aside one hour on Monday weekly to create some visualization and find some insights from the data.
The datasets are published each week at: MakeoverMonday Datasets.
Makeover Monday 20200928
This week is another one of the viz5 series – visualizing gender equality. As this article’s headline states – Child marriage is a violation of human rights, but is all too common. Seeing some countries with over half women married under 18 actually makes me very sad - life can be very tough in some corner of the world.
My Visualization
I used a revised gantt plot + line charts to show the % of female married under 18, and the difference with that percentage for male.

Insights
- There are 7 African countries with over 50% female getting married under 18 years old;
- However, in all those countries with high percentage of child marriage, the % of male getting married under 18 is always much lower – potentially indicating young girls are forced to marry someone much older than them :(
