Apparel Exports to the US
About Makeover Monday
MakeoverMonday is a social data project: “Each week we post a link to a chart, and its data, and then you rework the chart. Maybe you retell the story more effectively, or find a new story in the data. We’re curious to see the different approaches you all take. Whether it’s a simple bar chart or an elaborate infographic, we encourage everyone of all skills to partake. Together we can have broader conversations about and with data.”
Starting from Jan 08, 2018, I decided to put aside one hour on Monday weekly to create some visualization and find some insights from the data.
The datasets are published each week at: MakeoverMonday Datasets.
Makeover Monday 20201026
This week we are looking at the apparel exports to the US – Among the six major apparel exporters, we see significant drop since April, and this is very likely caused by the retroactive order cancellation due to COVID. The research can be found here.
My Visualization
I used simple line chart with color coding to tell an intuitive story.

Insights
- Since April, all six countries show significantly lower export of apparel to the US comparing to 2019, with the biggest drop of 92% seen from El Salvador and Hondruas in April;
- Relatively speaking, Vietnam show the lowest drop among the six countries (20% YoY drop in July) – but it this partly due to its much higher total export value – this 20% drop represents >$200M loss, which is even larger than the total apparel exports from El Salvador to the US in July 2019.
