The Digital Gender Gap

About Makeover Monday

MakeoverMonday is a social data project: “Each week we post a link to a chart, and its data, and then you rework the chart. Maybe you retell the story more effectively, or find a new story in the data. We’re curious to see the different approaches you all take. Whether it’s a simple bar chart or an elaborate infographic, we encourage everyone of all skills to partake. Together we can have broader conversations about and with data.”

Starting from Jan 08, 2018, I decided to put aside one hour on Monday weekly to create some visualization and find some insights from the data.

The datasets are published each week at: MakeoverMonday Datasets.

It’s another #Viz5 – looking at the digital gender gap this time. We all know that internet & mobile phone access directly impacts how much information one can get from the external world, and is positively correlated with one’s living condition and the society’s development. Therfore, it’s very meaningful to understand how large is the gender gap in internet/mobile phone access.

My Visualization

I combined line chart that shows the difference between internet access gender gap and mobile phone access gender gap, with two box plots to show the distribution differences.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • Generally speaking, we see larger gender gap regarding the Internet access than the mobile phone access – Median Internet access gap is 8%, while median mobile phone access gap is 3%;
  • Larger gap is seen in Middle East, Africa, and South Asia. Somehow Pakistan shows a way higher gender gap than any other countries in this dataset (I really hope this is some kind of data quality issue)…
  • We also see some Southeast and East Asian countries with a small reverse gender gap in Internet access (more female have access than male).
