Share of US Ad Spend

About Makeover Monday

MakeoverMonday is a social data project: “Each week we post a link to a chart, and its data, and then you rework the chart. Maybe you retell the story more effectively, or find a new story in the data. We’re curious to see the different approaches you all take. Whether it’s a simple bar chart or an elaborate infographic, we encourage everyone of all skills to partake. Together we can have broader conversations about and with data.”

Starting from Jan 08, 2018, I decided to put aside one hour on Monday weekly to create some visualization and find some insights from the data.

The datasets are published each week at: MakeoverMonday Datasets.

Makeover Monday 20201116

This week’s topic is ads spending in US by media – It has total spending from 2012 up to 2024 projection. From the original viz, we can clearly see that Internet media ads reached 50% of total spending in 2018, and is projected to takes ~60% of total spending in 2024, while we see drops in all the other categories.

My Visualization

I went with a simple line, but did some research to create a dashed line for the projections after 2020 (well, though it sounds an easy thing, it’s actually not that easy in Tableau…)

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • Share of Internet ads spending climbed up constantly from 16% in 2012 to 62% in 2024 (projected) while all the other categories are declining;
  • Though from 2012 and 2016, the share of TV ads is pretty consistent at ~34%, beginning 2016, Internet ads obviously starts eating its pie, and TV ads spend now is at ~25% of total ads spend.
