Renewables Overtake Fossil Fuels in Europe

About Makeover Monday

MakeoverMonday is a social data project: “Each week we post a link to a chart, and its data, and then you rework the chart. Maybe you retell the story more effectively, or find a new story in the data. We’re curious to see the different approaches you all take. Whether it’s a simple bar chart or an elaborate infographic, we encourage everyone of all skills to partake. Together we can have broader conversations about and with data.”

Starting from Jan 08, 2018, I decided to put aside one hour on Monday weekly to create some visualization and find some insights from the data.

The datasets are published each week at: MakeoverMonday Datasets.

Makeover Monday 20210201

This week’s data is about the energy generation in the Europe – it’s absolutely encouraging to see that renewables are overtaking fossial fuels in the Europe. The full report can be found here. As we all know, gloabl warming has been almost unstoppable now… We really need to make our own contribution to at least make it slower as it’s something impact all human beings.

Insights

  • For europe overall, we’ve seen the energy generated from renewables surparssed those generated from fossil in 2020 – hopefully this trend will sustain;
  • While renewables are overtaking fossial fuels, it’s also eating the share of nuclear – Overall, energy generated from nuclear account for roughly 25% of all the energy generated in 2020, but in some of the countries the percentage is much more higher. For example, France generated over 2/3 of its energy fron nuclear now (dropped from its all time high of 79%).
