Protests Against Limiting Abortion Rights in Poland

About Makeover Monday

MakeoverMonday is a social data project: “Each week we post a link to a chart, and its data, and then you rework the chart. Maybe you retell the story more effectively, or find a new story in the data. We’re curious to see the different approaches you all take. Whether it’s a simple bar chart or an elaborate infographic, we encourage everyone of all skills to partake. Together we can have broader conversations about and with data.”

Starting from Jan 08, 2018, I decided to put aside one hour on Monday weekly to create some visualization and find some insights from the data.

The datasets are published each week at: MakeoverMonday Datasets.

Makeover Monday 20210222

This week’s dataset is all the protests against the ruling of limiting abortion rights in Poland. On 22nd of October 2020, in the middle of a pandemic, the Constitutional Tribunal of Poland ruled abortion in case of fetal malformations unconstitutional. Since then, we have seen people protesting against it around the world. The original viz provides lots of details on it. I firmly believe that women have the abortion rights. Though it’s sad to see what happened in Poland, but meanwhile, seeing so many people supporting abortion rights around the world is encoraging.

Insights

  • Since the new rule came out on 10/22, we’ve seen over 1000 protests around the world, with the majority of them happened within one month;
  • Of course most protests happened in Poland, but there are also protests in many other European countries, in Asia, North America, and Oceania.
