Top Five Crops by Production

About Makeover Monday

MakeoverMonday is a social data project: “Each week we post a link to a chart, and its data, and then you rework the chart. Maybe you retell the story more effectively, or find a new story in the data. We’re curious to see the different approaches you all take. Whether it’s a simple bar chart or an elaborate infographic, we encourage everyone of all skills to partake. Together we can have broader conversations about and with data.”

Starting from Jan 08, 2018, I decided to put aside one hour on Monday weekly to create some visualization and find some insights from the data.

The datasets are published each week at: MakeoverMonday Datasets.

Makeover Monday 20210315

This week we are looking at an argricultural dataset. The original viz shows the top crops by area harvested, yields, production and revenue. I really like this viz as the gridlines really help to undertand the scale and compare across different crops.

My Visualization

When I was playing with different ways to visualize the data, I came across this modified bump chart look, and decided to go with it… (looks somewhat like rainbow) You can hover on the lines to highlight a specific type of crop.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • Cassava is the top produced crop in Africa, but it does not show up in top 5 in any other areas;
  • Crops used to produce sugar (sugar cane and sugar beet) are always among top 2 in all areas, though Europe relies on sugar beet while all other continents plant more sugar cane;
  • Soybean production has more than 10x since 1960s, and went up from 5th to 3rd by production in Americas.
