Exports to EU plunge by 40% in first month since Brexit

About Makeover Monday

MakeoverMonday is a social data project: “Each week we post a link to a chart, and its data, and then you rework the chart. Maybe you retell the story more effectively, or find a new story in the data. We’re curious to see the different approaches you all take. Whether it’s a simple bar chart or an elaborate infographic, we encourage everyone of all skills to partake. Together we can have broader conversations about and with data.”

Starting from Jan 08, 2018, I decided to put aside one hour on Monday weekly to create some visualization and find some insights from the data.

The datasets are published each week at: MakeoverMonday Datasets.

This week’s data is from this report from The Guardian, looking at UK’s exports to EU over time. Brexit has leads to a plunge, which is even worse than the COVID hits last year.

Insights

  • We see signifiant YoY drop in exports among all categories, with over 50% drop in ‘Animal & Vegetable Oils & Fact’ and ‘Food & Live Animals’ categories – maybe there are some restriction of importing animal related products to EU?
  • Though we also see significant YoY drop in many categories in the first half of 2020 due to COVID, the drop is worse (or close to worst drop during COVID) in this Jan.
