Regional Price Parity For Each State

About Makeover Monday

MakeoverMonday is a social data project: “Each week we post a link to a chart, and its data, and then you rework the chart. Maybe you retell the story more effectively, or find a new story in the data. We’re curious to see the different approaches you all take. Whether it’s a simple bar chart or an elaborate infographic, we encourage everyone of all skills to partake. Together we can have broader conversations about and with data.”

Starting from Jan 08, 2018, I decided to put aside one hour on Monday weekly to create some visualization and find some insights from the data.

The datasets are published each week at: MakeoverMonday Datasets.

Makeover Monday 20210426

This week’s dataset is about the price parity in each US states, including the state, year (2008 to 2019), category, and price index (100 as national average). I like the original viz as it clearly shows the price ranking and relative difference.

My Visualization

I decided to go with bump chart this week to show the top 10 and bottom 10 states in each price category as it’s a very classic ranking log dataset.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • For ‘All items’ category, not surprisingly, we see Hawaii ranked 1st among all states most of the years as it’s a tourism state and isolated from other continents on the ocean (which means higher transportantion costs);
  • But we see more changes in the 2nd to 5th place – DC ranked 2nd initially and even 1st for a short period time, but now declined to 5th place, while CA climbed to the 2nd place (it even ranked 1st in the ‘Rent’ category), followed by NY and NJ;
  • Not surprisingly, the most expensive ones are mostly locate along the west or east coasts, while the cheapest ones are mainly in the mid.
