How Common is Your Birthday?

About Makeover Monday

MakeoverMonday is a social data project: “Each week we post a link to a chart, and its data, and then you rework the chart. Maybe you retell the story more effectively, or find a new story in the data. We’re curious to see the different approaches you all take. Whether it’s a simple bar chart or an elaborate infographic, we encourage everyone of all skills to partake. Together we can have broader conversations about and with data.”

Starting from Jan 08, 2018, I decided to put aside one hour on Monday weekly to create some visualization and find some insights from the data.

The datasets are published each week at: MakeoverMonday Datasets.

This week’s dataset is pretty fun – how common is your birthday. It provides a dataset of # of births in the US every day from 1994 to 2014. You can find the original viz here with a good summary of insights.

My Visualization

The original viz is a heatmap. I am also creating a heatmap but with two added bar charts to show aggregated month/year level daily birth trends.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • Aug and September have always been the months with most births – this makes sense as people have more holidays in Nov/Dec for baby making :)
  • People also try to avoid giving birth on holidays like 1/1 or 12/25, as these days have very low births in general;
  • Interestingly, there is also a very obvious weekly pattern – more births during the weekdays while fewer on the weekend.
