2020 Electoral Map If Only ____ Voted

About Makeover Monday

MakeoverMonday is a social data project: “Each week we post a link to a chart, and its data, and then you rework the chart. Maybe you retell the story more effectively, or find a new story in the data. We’re curious to see the different approaches you all take. Whether it’s a simple bar chart or an elaborate infographic, we encourage everyone of all skills to partake. Together we can have broader conversations about and with data.”

Starting from Jan 08, 2018, I decided to put aside one hour on Monday weekly to create some visualization and find some insights from the data.

The datasets are published each week at: MakeoverMonday Datasets.

This week’s dataset is about the 2020 US Election – ‘if only __ voted’. It’s a very interesting perspective to understand how opinion divergent in the US among different demographics. You can find the original viz in this Reddit post. And as a disclaimer – here I don’t want to talk about political views, but simply visualizing the data.

My Visualization

I used simple stacked bar charts and grouped demographics into several categories for easier comparison. You can also hover on the bar charts to see the electoral map.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • We see very divergent opinions among different age groups, eudcation levels, income level, and location; Even men and women give us totally different election results;
  • And as you would imagine, different states vary a lot on this topic – for example, Biden almost always got States like CA and MA no matter what demographics you are looking at, except Prostetants and Voted on Election Day.
