UK Vaccine Coverage by Age and Ethnicity

About Makeover Monday

MakeoverMonday is a social data project: “Each week we post a link to a chart, and its data, and then you rework the chart. Maybe you retell the story more effectively, or find a new story in the data. We’re curious to see the different approaches you all take. Whether it’s a simple bar chart or an elaborate infographic, we encourage everyone of all skills to partake. Together we can have broader conversations about and with data.”

Starting from Jan 08, 2018, I decided to put aside one hour on Monday weekly to create some visualization and find some insights from the data.

The datasets are published each week at: MakeoverMonday Datasets.

This week we are looking at a very import stat at this moment - the vaccination coverage rate by age and ethnicity in the UK. The original data is from OpenSAFELY, with some basic coverage trends by different cohorts.

My Visualization

To easily compare the vaccination coverage trend by age and ethnicity, I put each of them on one dimension, with bar charts showing the monthly trend.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • Elder age groups (80+) started vaccination process earlier so their vaccination coverage ramps up faster than the other age groups;
  • Among the different ethnicity groups white show the highest coverage rate as almost all 50+ age groups has reached 90% coverage, while black show the lowest coverage rate – it would be interesting to understand more why this is the case.
