How’s UCAS Clearing Going?

About Makeover Monday

MakeoverMonday is a social data project: “Each week we post a link to a chart, and its data, and then you rework the chart. Maybe you retell the story more effectively, or find a new story in the data. We’re curious to see the different approaches you all take. Whether it’s a simple bar chart or an elaborate infographic, we encourage everyone of all skills to partake. Together we can have broader conversations about and with data.”

Starting from Jan 08, 2018, I decided to put aside one hour on Monday weekly to create some visualization and find some insights from the data.

The datasets are published each week at: MakeoverMonday Datasets.

This week’s dataset is about UCAS clearing. Honestly, I have no idea what UCAS clearning is, so I have to google to get some idea (if you are in the same boat, you can check outt this article). The original viz is also a Tableau dashboard. As I don’t have much knowledge on this topic, I decided to polish the current viz, instead of doing something very different.

My Visualization

I made two mean changes: 1. Updated the nesting from year -> JCQ to JCQ -> year to make it easier to see the status distribution change trend; 2. Removed the bars which make the original dashboard very confusing in my opinion.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • Over time, we see the group ‘placed’ taking higher percentage, while the ‘free to be placed’ decreasing (but seems bounced back a bit in 2021);
  • Higher JCQ seems to have a higher percentage of ‘placed’.
