Estimation of Country-Specific and Global Prevalence of Male Circumcision

About Makeover Monday

MakeoverMonday is a social data project: “Each week we post a link to a chart, and its data, and then you rework the chart. Maybe you retell the story more effectively, or find a new story in the data. We’re curious to see the different approaches you all take. Whether it’s a simple bar chart or an elaborate infographic, we encourage everyone of all skills to partake. Together we can have broader conversations about and with data.”

Starting from Jan 08, 2018, I decided to put aside one hour on Monday weekly to create some visualization and find some insights from the data.

The datasets are published each week at: MakeoverMonday Datasets.

This week’s dataset is about the estimation of country-specific and global prevalence of male circumcision. As the article stated, male circumcision and one of the most common surgical procedures in the world, and except from the religious reasons, it actually has the benefits of protecting against multiple conditions over a lifetime.

My Visualization

I don’t have creative idea this week, so a traditional viz with bar charts on the top showing region aggregated values, with actions to filter on the map and table to show country level numbers.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • MC prevalance varies a lot among different regions, and seems to be highly correlated with religious belief and culture, as regions like western Asia and Northern Africa show super higher overall MC %;
  • On the other end, European countries, Latin American countries, and eastern Asian countries all show low % of male circumcision.
