MakeoverMonday is a social data project: “Each week we post a link to a chart, and its data, and then you rework the chart. Maybe you retell the story more effectively, or find a new story in the data. We’re curious to see the different approaches you all take. Starting from Jan 08, 2018, I decided to put aside one hour on Monday weekly to create some visualization and find some insights from the data.

This week, we are looking at the top 20 largest solar power plants in the world. The original viz is very fancy with inner verticle bars showing the capacity rank, and radial bars showing the size and other info like country, year, etc. But this also makes it a bit hard to consume at the first glance.

My Visualization

To simplify the chart a bit, I also created a radial bar chart to rank the plants by capacity – in case you are not familiar with how to make it, here is a great turtorial. The little circles at the beginning and end of the bars show the size of the plants, and when you hover on each plant, you can see more info on the upper left corner.


Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • The largest solar power plant (Bhadla Solar Park) by capacity has 4x capacity than the 20th plant;
  • However, the soloar power plant with largest capacity is not neccessarily the most efficient one, if we look at the capacity / size ratio;
  • Not surprisingly, India, China and US have most solar power plants among the top 20 list.
