MLB All-Time Wins Above Replacement

About Makeover Monday

MakeoverMonday is a social data project: “Each week we post a link to a chart, and its data, and then you rework the chart. Maybe you retell the story more effectively, or find a new story in the data. We’re curious to see the different approaches you all take. Whether it’s a simple bar chart or an elaborate infographic, we encourage everyone of all skills to partake. Together we can have broader conversations about and with data.”

Starting from Jan 08, 2018, I decided to put aside one hour on Monday weekly to create some visualization and find some insights from the data.

The datasets are published each week at: MakeoverMonday Datasets.

Makeover Monday 20210927

This week is the 300th week of MakeoverMonday! Therefore, Andy decided to use the same data as week 1 – MLB player stats. Honestly, I have zero knowledge on MLB (and most sports metrics), so I can only list the metrics as they are…..

My Visualization

I used scatter plots with standardized metrics to show the stats distribution among all players all-time, and when you hover on a certain dot, it will show you the same player same season on the other metrics, with a stat summary at bottom left.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • With very limited knowledge on MLB stats, I can only comment on the distribution of the metrics – looks like RAR and RBR are left-skewed (higher points density after standardization), Trpg is more of a uniform distribution, while the others are more normally distributed.
