This week, I made visualization using the Steam Player Data on Kaggle. The dataset is originally scraped from steamcharts, which keeps track of top steam games.

My Visualization

Bump chart is my favorite whenever I need to visualization ranking changes. However, one thing to call out for this dataset is that although the dataset goes back to 2012, it only pulls the current top 100 games. So there is a little chance that there are games that were in the top 5 most popular games in previous years but are no longer among the current top 100 (chances should be low? haha).

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • Dota2 is probably the most popular games on Steam in the past 10 years as it has been in the 1 st place from 2012 to 2016, and only replaced by Counter Strike: Global Offensive recently;
  • Meanwhile, we see some great upward trend of Counter Strike: Global Offensive, as it was released in 2012, and climbed from 5th all the way to 1st;
  • above two games are examples of games being loved for long, however, there are also games that made to top 5 for one year (the year released typically) and disappeared from the list, for example Cyberpunk2077 last year.
