Programming Languages Use On A Regular Basis

This week, after hours of searching datasets (yes it’s very hard to find one that is interesting to visualize sometimes…), I decided to go with the 2021 Kaggle ML&DS Survey. This is a very rich survey dataset, so there are lots of stories you can tell from it. I will potentially keep making viz from it for several weeks :)

My Visualization

So for this first one, let’s look at the correlation between the programming lanaguges people use on a daily basis vs. their current title. I highlighted the three that are most popular in the DS&ML field.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • Python is by far the most popular programming languages for data professionals, with over 50% people using it on a daily basis among all the titles;
  • There are two exceptions though – Among DBA/Database managers, it was surpassed by SQL by 7%; And among Statistian, it was surpassed by R by 5%;
  • Though there have been lots of debates on R or Python, looks like in real life, R’s adoption is much lower than Python or SQL, and it has a similar popularity as Java, Javascript, C, C++, etc.
