Hawaii Islands Tourists Visit
This week let me continue the topic of Hawaii. I spent a great week at the Kauai Island last week – it is a relatively small island with gorgeous nature and the famous Na Pali Coast. This makes me curious which islands tourists visit most and how it changes before and during the pandemic. So I go to the Hawaii Visitor Characteristics website again and pulled the % visitors to each island over time.
My Visualization
The visual is pretty simple again – simple line charts with colors presenting each islands. But it tells the story well.

Insights
- Oahu has always been the most popular islands all time (of course there are more flights to Honolulu airport as well, which means many visitors might arrive at Oahu first then fly to other islands);
- At the beginning of the pandemic, we see the % of visitors visiting Oahu spiked while % to all the other islands significant decreased, most likely due to the safety restrictions at the time;
- Later in early 2021, we know the visitors to Hawaii bounced back (from our last viz), but more visitors going to Maui but less to Oahu comparing to pre-covid time, which might be correlated with the fact that we see fewer first-time visitors to Hawaii in 2021 (people were exploring other islands).
