US Most Popular Dog Breeds
I’ve seen lots of cute dogs in company slack channels these days, and this makes me wonder what are the most popular dog breeds in the US. I found this list based on AKC registration statistics each year between 2013 to 2021 and decided to make a visualization of it. Moreover, this website does not have the most popular breeds, but also great introduction and rating of each breed’s traits.
My Visualization
This visualization consists of three charts – a bar chart on # of years this breeds are in the top 5 between 2013 to 2021, a bump chart on the ranking, and a dots plot on the trait rating of the breed you are hovering at on the bar chart or the bump chart.
Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.
Insights
- Labrador Retriever has always been the most popular dog breed between 2013 and 2021 (actually according to the website, it has been no.1 ever since 1991 :));
- Golden Retriver and German Shepherd Dog are very popular as they are on the top 5 list for the whole 9 years, but German Shepherd Dog’s ranking has dropped from to 4 in the recent two years, surpassed by French Bulldog, which first showed up on the list in 2017.
