TSA Checkpoint Travel Numbers 2019-2022

I am travelling to a company offsite soon after a long time. Now that pandemic situation seems to get better and better, people start travelling again. Therefore, I am interested to make a air traffic visualization this week. I found several datasets online, and ended up with this TSA checkpoint travel number data as it has a daily comparison from 2019 to 2022 year-to-date, and could serve as a good proxy to overall air traffic in the US.

My Visualization

The visualization has two parts – an inner line chart on moving 7-days average of TSA checkpoint travel numbers, and a circle outside working as a YoY comparison, with colors denoting years and size of dots denoting traffic volume.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • We saw a dramatic decrease in TSA traffic in March 2020 from ~2M daily all the way down to ~100k daily;
  • Air traffic climbed back gradually and almost reached pre-covid level in summer 2021, but with later outbreaks, there was another drop in Jan 2022;
  • And it bounced back quickly again since Feb this year til today (and hopefully that’s the end of the pandemic…)
