USA Cities Elevation

I went to Denver last week. It is a nice city with lots of attractions to explore. But because of the elevation, I was drinking tons of water but still felt very dry… So this week, I decided to make a visualization of the elevation of US cities. I found this wikipedia page with all the cities above 3,000 feet elevation and their population.

My Visualization

This visualization has a scatter plot of all the cities and their elevations by the states, with size indicating the populations. I also put a small map on the lower right. When you select one or more dots on the chart or the map, you will see the corresponding dots being highlighted in the other visualization.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • The middle and western parts of US are much more plain than the eastern part, and you can clearly see the Rocky Montains on the map;
  • Utah and Colorado are the two states with most high-altitude cities, though Utah has more cities at ~1500m elevation, while Colorado has some of the highest-elevated cities in the US;
  • Denver is the most populated city with 1500m+ elevation.
