Anime Scores Distribution by Seasons

I have been watching anime for over 15 years now, so I was very excited when I came across the Anime Rating data on Kaggle. The data has all the anime listed on My Anime List with their titles, rankings, ratings, popularity scores, etc. This week I am looking at the anime scores distribution by release seasons. When looking at the most popular anime, all the top six were released in the Spring season. So I am curious if a certain season produces higher quality anime than the others.

My Visualization

In this visualization, I binned the anime scores with interval of 0.2, and put the score distribution side by side by each release season.

Insights

  • Generally speaking, anime scores follow the normal distribution – ~8% of anime had rating over 8.0 since 2000, while half of the anime rating fell between 5 to 7;
  • Comparing scores distribution across the release seasons, only the Spring and Fall seasons had anime over the rating of 9.0;
  • We see more high score anime among the Spring season anime with two score peaks among 6.4 and 7.2, while the Winter season anime scores are distributed more evenly between 6 to 7.4.
