Anime Scores Distribution by Genres

This week, I am exploring the same MyAnimeList anime scores dataset as last week. Last time I focused on the scores distribution by seasons, and this time I am looking at it by the genres, trying to figure out what is the most popular genre and what is the most highly-rated genre.

My Visualization

This visualization consists of two parts – a score distribution scatter plot and a table showing # of anime and median scores in the genre. Please notice that one anime could have multiple genres, so the dots are not distinct.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • By far the most popular genre is ‘comedy’ with ~1,500 anime released since 2000, followed by ‘Action’ (~1000) and ‘Fantasy’ (~800);
  • Looking at the median scores, most genres have median scores around 7 – ‘Suspense’ is the genre with a highest median score of 7.6, while ‘Avant Garde’ is the lowest (6.4) with a very small sample size;
  • Most of the score distributions have long tails on the left with a few very low-score animes.
