Gun Violence Incidents in the United States
The mass shooting at the Robb Elementary School in Texas last week is really disheartening. Gun control has been discussed in the US for a long time, but meanwhile, we have seen so many gun violence happening across the country. This week, to understand how severe the problem is, I am visualizing the gun violence incidents in the US since 2014, using this dataset I found on Kaggle.
My Visualization
This visualization has two parts – on the top, it has the monthly trend of # incidents and people injured; and on the bottom, there is an incidents map, with size of the circles indicating the # of incidents happened in the city. You can adjust the time window using the slider in the middle. You can also click on any dots on the map to zoom into a certain area’s gun violence incidents trend.
Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.
Insights
- In the US, every month, there are ~4k gun violence incidents, causing ~2k injuries and ~1k deaths;
- We saw two spikes in gun violence incidents around July 2020 and May 2021 – there could be many factors behind it, for example, pandemic, politics, and certain events, etc.;
- The map seems to suggest there are more gun violence incidents on the east than on the west, but this might not be true as it has something to do with the city and population density;
- Chicago has way more gun voilence incidents than any other cities in the US (23k incidents since 2014, which means 200+ per month).
