Inflation Rate 1960-2021

Annual inflation rate in the US unexpectedly accelerated to 8.6% in May of 2022, the highest since December of 1981 and compared to market forecasts of 8.3%. This leads to stock drops last Friday and today. This week, let’s look at the inflation rate of the top 6 countries (the US, China, Japan, Germary, India, and the UK) by GDP from 1960 to 2021. The data comes from worldbank.

My Visualization

This visulzation focus on 1. show how US inflation rate has been tredning and compared to the other countries historically; 2. how high the current inflation is. Therefore, I used red color for US trend but gray for all the others, and added a reference line for May 2022 number.

Insights

  • The US saw the highest inflations in 1974 to 1980 with 10%+ inflation rates. But since 1991, inflation rate has been under 5%, until this year;
  • Among the top 6 countries by GDP, US inflation rate has been in the middle – Japan usually has the lowest inflation among the six, while we’ve seen some pretty extreme inflation from India, the UK, and China in the past.
