U.S. Regular Gasoline Prices Since 2010
Last week during the holiday break, I rented a car and went to a nearly national park with my friend. I don’t usually drive so this is the rare occasion that I need to pay for gasoline. As we all know, the gasoline price has been surging, but by how much? I did some search online and found a weekly gasoline price data on the U.S. Energy Information Administration website. This week, I am visualizing the price trend since 2010.
My Visualization
The highlighted red line on the chart is the US regular price, while the gray band indicating the price range (made with Gantt plot in Tableau). You can also select any location from the right list to highlight its price trend.

Insights
- Gasoline prices were at a low level from 2017 to early 2021 (~$2 per gallon), but the price skyrocketed to ~$5 per gallon in just 12 months;
- With price going up, we can also see a larger and larger price differences among different regions in the US;
- Seattle almost always contribute to the highest price among the reported regions, while Texas has the lowest price (makes sense geographically).
