2022 Monkeypox Outbreak

W.H.O decleared Monkeypox Spread a Global Health Emergency on 2022/07/23 (news). There have been more than 16k cases in 75 countries reported since May. As we are still recovering from COVID, this definitely raised concern on if we will go through another pandemic. This week, therefore, I decided to look at the Monkeypox confirmed cases data. I used the daily confirmed cases by country data from Our World in Data, comparing the confirmed cases trend since first case in every country.

My Visualization

This visualization consists of two parts – on the left, it has a line chart showing confirmed cases by country since first case; on the right, it has a bar chart showing total confirmed cases as of 07/22. You can hover on any country on the right to highest its trend on the left.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • From countries where the disease is not endemic, the first Monkeypox case was reported in early May in UK and soon spreaded to many other European countries and North America;
  • We see exponential growth trend in some countries like the US and Spain, but we also see many other countries that are able to keep the confirmed cases at a relatively low level (at least for now).
