Stack Overflow Visit/Participation Frequency x Years Coding

Stack Overflow has been my best friend when coding. This week, I came across the Stack Overflow 2022 Developer Survey result data. This is a very rich dataset with 70k+ respondents answering questions on their profile, coding experience, career, tools they use, etc. As there are so much I can dig into, for this week’s visualization specifically, I am focusing on the Stack Overflow visit and participation frequency and how it varies across respondents with different coding experiences.

My Visualization

The visualization is pretty simple – There are two stacked bar chart, one showing visit frequency and another showing participation frequency.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • Visit frequency seems to increase first than decrease with years of coding experience. However, there are always 70%+ of respondents saying they use Stack Overflow more frequently than weekly (but of course, this could be a biased sample as it is a survey ran by Stack Overflow);
  • On the other hand, participation frequency overall is much lower than visit frequency. There is also a clear trend of increasing participation frequency along with years of coding experience.
